Hortitherapy without Secrets. Nature and Psychology against Diabetes, Zofia Wojciechowska, Institute of Horticultural Therapy, Gardens of Health/ Instytut Hortiterapii, Ogrody Zdrowia

The First International Conference will be an opportunity for me to discuss green work places, to talk about my work place which I created in Mrągowo. As an individual I was able to take advantage of EU Program funding provided to support women 45+ to enter the workforce, which enabled the establishment of a business in an area that has the biggest unemployment rate in Poland. And this was possible thanks to the understanding of innovative needs for the development of micro businesses by the County Employment Agency (CEA). That is a difficult undertaking, as public funds are subject to a number of clauses and restrictions. It was no mean feat to convince the CEA staff that investment in the area of innovative activities by businesses based on cultural and natural heritage was the correct direction to take. It required the submission of many opinions and recommendations, simply put – it was a very difficult process indeed! And I should say that the opinion by local government authorities based on documentation and strategic developmental plans for Warmia & Masuria made available by the Mrągowo Promotional Unit contributed to the establishment of the Masuria for Diabetics program. It is this program that I propose for discussion during this Conference as this forum provides the perfect platform to discuss developmental problems and real support enabling small yet innovative businesses to function. Our region requires work to be done at the grassroots level. The economic situation in Warmia and Masuria, where all those who want to work within an innovative framework have to manage, needs the consolidation of communities around the idea of including cultural and natural heritage into their services packages, e.g. health- related tourism.
